The city has 48 official barrios. Most visitors only need a handful — these are the ones worth your hours.

The largest barrio and the one with the most to offer. Palermo Soho brings boutiques, cafés and street art; Palermo Hollywood, the best restaurants and bars; Palermo Chico, embassies and leafy parks. If you only see one neighborhood, make it this one.

The oldest barrio — cobblestones, antique markets, tango milongas, and a Sunday fair that swallows the whole neighborhood. The Mercado de San Telmo (1897) is essential for the food and the atmosphere alike.

The most European-feeling barrio. Home to the famous Recoleta Cemetery (where Evita rests), upscale dining, the MALBA museum and wide, tree-lined boulevards. The weekend artisan fair beside the cemetery is one of the city's best.

Famous for the colorful Caminito and La Bombonera stadium (Boca Juniors). A tourist magnet, yes — but a genuinely atmospheric one. Stick to the main area and go in daylight.

The newest barrio, built on reclaimed land along the Río de la Plata. Modern towers, the iconic Puente de la Mujer, waterfront dining and a promenade made for a morning run or an evening out.

Residential and calmer, with excellent local restaurants and the River Plate stadium. Less touristy — which, here, is entirely the point.

Buenos Aires runs on an excellent public transport system. One SUBE card — loaded at any kiosk or pharmacy — covers the subte, buses and trains. Download Cuándo Llega to track buses in real time, and lean on Uber or Cabify: both work well and beat taxis on price.

- Currency — the Argentine Peso (ARS). Carry cash; many local spots don't take foreign cards. Change money at official "cuevas" for better rates than ATMs.
- Weather — four real seasons. Summer (Dec–Feb) runs hot and humid, winter (Jun–Aug) mild but wet. Spring and fall are the sweet spot.
- Safety — big-city rules apply. Keep expensive phones and jewelry out of sight in tourist areas; the main zones are fine by day.
- Tipping — 10–15% at restaurants is standard. Not required, always appreciated.
- Language — Rioplatense Spanish: "vos" for "tú", and "ll"/"y" landing as a soft "sh". A few words go a long way.
- Moneda — el Peso Argentino (ARS). Llevá efectivo; muchos lugares no toman tarjetas extranjeras. Cambiá en "cuevas" oficiales para mejores tasas que los cajeros.
- Clima — cuatro estaciones reales. El verano (dic–feb) es caluroso y húmedo, el invierno (jun–ago) templado pero lluvioso. Primavera y otoño son ideales.
- Seguridad — reglas de ciudad grande. No exhibas celulares ni joyas caras en zonas turísticas; las zonas principales son seguras de día.
- Propina — 10–15% en restaurantes es lo estándar. No es obligatoria, siempre se agradece.
